Introduction

It is a great pleasure for the Learning Commons at Chicago Theological Seminary to house the most complete collection of the works of the Rev. Dr. G. Campbell Morgan. Lauded as one of the top ten preachers of the twentieth century, Morgan received his Doctor of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary in 1902. In 2000, Morgan’s grandson, Howard C. Morgan, became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CTS. During his tenure, Mr. Morgan and his siblings, John Morgan, Mary Ann Morgan, and Dr. Richard L. Morgan, began gathering their grandfather’s books and documents. They sought archival materials from churches where G. Campbell Morgan served, such as Westminster Chapel in London and Tabernacle Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. They secured other collections of Morgan’s writings, including the collection at the Department of History of Presbyterian Church (USA) in Montreat, North Carolina. They donated these materials along with their own collections to establish the G. Campbell Morgan Collection at CTS.

The G. Campbell Morgan Collection preserves Morgan’s handwritten Sermon Register, listing 1639 sermons that Morgan preached during his life, along with original manuscripts of his sermon notes. The Collection also contains his sermons and writings in the Westminster publication series, which includes Westminster Pulpit, Westminster Bible Record, Great Physician, and Great Chapters of the Bible. Many of Morgan’s books are part of the Collection, including The Analyzed Bible and God’s Last Word to Man. The Collection also includes newspaper clips, lecture notes, photographs, and other archival materials.

In addition to the Collection at CTS, the Hammond Library has created a Digital Collection on the library website. The Digital Collection indexes all sermon titles that appear in the Sermon Register and contains digital copies of selected sermon notes. Learning Commons staff indexed, cataloged, and arranged boxes of disorganized documents so that the Digital Collection can present detailed lists of all archival materials included in the Collection. Documents are classified by title, subject, scriptural reference, and date of publication for easy search.

We are glad to present this collection to all potential researchers of G. Campbell Morgan.
